Eating out is easy. The truth is though, making your meals at home has countless benefits. Filling your fridge with healthy, delicious, whole foods is one of the smartest actions you can take toward your health. Here’s a few reasons why:

  • Having healthy food at arms reach allows you to intuitively eat. When you’re hungry, you’ll be able to immediately fulfill your body’s cravings.
  • Making your own meals is a form of creative expression
  • Grazing, or eating small snacks all day keeps your metabolism running well, which can promote weight loss and overall health
  • You can save a ton of money buying staple foods instead of frequently going out
  • Having healthy food that you enjoy can be a motivation to continue your self healing journey

The Rooted pantry is a section of this community that will inspire you to reflect on your eating habits, and encourage you to fill your home with foods that nourish your life. There is no particular set of rules as to what you should and shouldn’t buy, but the three words I keep in mind when grocery shopping is: nutritious, real, and satisfying. Before you set any item in your cart, ask yourself, is it nutrient-dense, is it real food, and will it satisfy you in a healthy way? Many people will begin their health journey by buying a bunch of foods they don’t even like, and then later on wonder why they started eating Mcdonald’s again. It’s great to try new things, but focus on the healthy foods you know you like.

My favorite foods are plant-based, flavorful, and easy on my tummy. I also try to buy all organic items, but will sometimes opt for gmo free if organic is not available. I consider the cost difference an investment toward my health. I like to recognize my eating priorities before I go into any grocery store, and I also make sure to eat a good meal so I don’t get distracted by all the food.

Here’s a few snaps of my recently stocked fridge/pantry so you can have some grocery inspiration and see what a plant-based vegan keeps in their house:

IMG_0243Although I don’t eat a lot of mock meat, I like to keep veggie dogs and veggie sausage in my fridge in case I start craving comfort food

IMG_0235I like to meal prep, so I generally buy my veggies based upon what I plan to make. Also, I’m a tofu lover, hence the four packs

I love curry, which is why I stalk up on coconut milk. I also make veggie burritos, so I buy refried beans. Amy’s soup is an easy go-to when I don’t have much time to cook

IMG_0249Chia, hemp seeds, moringa powder, spirulina, and maca powder are some of my all time favorite superfoods. They fuel my body, so I like to incorporate them in various meals. Note the perfect avocados


So there ya have it. This is my most recent grocery haul, and I’m always making changes and revisions to my palette, so you just might see an update in the future!
